GSO Capital Partners L.P., a New York City-based registered investment management firm manages $8 billion in assets through its office in New York,London, Houston and Los Angeles. Founded in July 2005, the firm draws on the skills and experience of its 115 employees worldwide to invest in a broad array of public and private securities across multiple investment strategies.
Key areas of focus include leveraged loans, distressed investments, special situations, capital structure arbitrage, mezzanine securities and private equipment. GSO manages capital on behalf of insurance companies, banks, pension funds, endowments, foundations, and a variety of other businesses.
GSO Capital recently renovated its headquarters office on Park Avenue. Design of the office space and trading center was created by the architectural firm The Mufson Partnership, New York City. Architectural woodwork for the project was fabricated and installed by AWI member firm ISLAND Architectural Woodwork Inc. of Ronkonkoma, New York.
According to architect Larry Mufson, "the client was seeking an idiosyncratic design not reflected in the firm's culture; one that reflects the best of early twentieth century New York City architecture translated to corporate interiors."
It was determined by the design team that the best method of illustrating historic detail is through the use of architectural woodwork, accented with bronze and glass details.
ISLAND Architectural Woodwork provided wood and glass office fronts, wall paneling, crown moldings, a custom reception desk, wood ceilings, portals, doors and frames, architectural metal and glass, and custom convector enclosures for the project.
The paneling throughout the office space is fabricated of Crotch Mahogany, reports Joe Ondrush of ISLAND Woodworking. " Each leaf of the Crotch Mahogany was hand selected by the architect. The leaves were exceptionally wide so one leaf was used on the paneling," he says.
Our objectives were realized by the quality and design of the architectural woodwork, notes GSO Capital's Margaret Smith. " We wanted a professional, elegant looking space and our main focus was the reception area as that is the one area that creates a lasting impression for clients when they enter the space. We worked closely with our architect and with ISLAND Woodwork to accomplish these objectives."
Project owner, architect and woodworking teams worked closely together to ensure a lasting impression was created. ISLAND Woodwork was included from the very beginning, Ondrush says. "We were detailing and engineering this project as the shop drawings were in progress."
The woodworking firm did an extraordinary job on the lobby paneling, Mufson says. "The artistry of layup and the hand-rubbed finishing give the panels an elegant, polished appearance.
"Working with the woodworking team was tremendous," he continues. "All shop drawings were done prior to having access to the space. It was a fast-track project and they kept on schedule the entire time."
The most difficult part of the project was the reception area, notes Smith. "This area turned out to be truly a work of art. We had an excellent relationship with the woodworking firm. We had a very aggressive time schedule-the space was demoed in March of 2005 and our goal was to be moved in by July 1st. All of the trades worked around the clock to achieve our dead-line which was indeed met by all."
Ondrush agrees that the full height paneling in the reception area is the most noteworthy of the project." The doors and transoms blend in beautifully with the paneling, and the large base and crown mouldings give reception area a breathtaking appearance."
As a testament to the teamwork and the final result, Smith adds that GSO Capital hopes to be able to work again with the woodworker as the management firm continues to grow.
